Hey coach,
Below this article, I attached a video done by Donald Miller from Story Brand, where he talks about how Indiana Football Coach Curt Cignetti changed the culture by changing the language. I thought it might be helpful for you.
Last week we talked about leverage — spending time on the few actions that make everything else easier.
This week, I want to show you the single mindset shift that helps coaches actually use leverage instead of living in reaction mode.
Most coaches walk into every day asking:
“What needs my attention right now?”
It sounds responsible… but it’s actually the fastest way to stay overwhelmed.
That question leads to:
- starting the day in your inbox
- jumping between tasks
- reacting to problems someone else created
- focusing on what’s loud, not what’s important
- ending the day feeling like nothing meaningful moved forward
When you start with “What needs my attention today?” you’re letting the day decide what matters.
Now contrast it with this question:
“What will actually matter a week from now?”
This instantly shifts you from a reactor to an operator.
Here’s why this question changes everything:
It forces prioritization
Only the work that truly moves your season forward rises to the top.
It eliminates busy work
If it won’t matter in a week, it doesn’t deserve your best focus today.
It protects your energy
You stop giving your prime hours to low-impact tasks.
It makes you proactive, not reactive
The day stops running you. You start running it.
It creates momentum
The work that matters this week also matters in a month — and in your season.
This is what it means to win the day.
Not doing more. Not grinding harder. Not squeezing in extra tasks.
Winning the day is designing the day so it works for you before the chaos hits.
So before you dive into the week, take five minutes and ask:
If I asked “What will matter a week from now?” before my day starts… what would rise to the top?
Hit reply and tell me. I’d love to hear what shows up first — and your answers will help shape next week’s newsletter.
More soon, — Mandy
P.S. I’m building something behind the scenes for coaches who want to stop operating on reaction and start operating with clarity, leverage, and intention. You’ll hear more soon — but trust me, you’re going to want to be part of this.
