What Got You Here Won’t Get You There

Oct 04, 2025

Hey Coach,

A few weeks ago, I shared an article with you called “10 Success Mindset Shifts Every Coach Needs.”

In that piece, I gave you the full list of shifts that helped me go from just surviving the grind to actually winning the day—at work and at home.

Today, I want to start breaking those down, one at a time, and show you exactly how I’ve used them in my own coaching career—and how you can too.

Let’s start with Shift #1: What got you here won’t get you there.

When I was coaching, I remember one season where we had a good year. We hit some goals. The system we were running worked pretty well

So what did I do the next season?
I dusted off the same playbook. Same drills. Same routines. Same recruiting plan.

I thought, “If it worked last year, it’ll work again.”

But it didn’t.

Our team didn’t have the same chemistry. The competition had gotten better. And honestly, I was stuck in auto-pilot mode. I wasn’t growing, and neither were my athletes.

That season was a wake-up call for me.
I realized: what got me here wasn’t going to get me there.

Here’s why this matters for you:

You’ve worked hard to get where you are. The habits, strategies, and systems you use today got you this far… but they won’t necessarily take you to the next level.

Think about it:

  • The way you recruit now… will it land you the next wave of talent?
  • The way you plan practices now… will it keep your athletes engaged next year?
  • The way you manage your mornings… will it give you the energy to keep thriving, not just surviving?

If the answer is “probably not,” then it’s time to change the playbook.

Imagine this version of yourself:

You walk into practice with fresh energy because you’re not stuck in last year’s routine.
You know exactly what’s working and what’s wasting your time.
Your players notice it too—they feed off your growth.

That’s what happens when you stop clinging to the old playbook and start creating a new one.

How to apply it this week:

  1. Grab a notebook. Write down three habits, strategies, or routines you’ve been repeating just because “that’s how we’ve always done it.”
  2. Circle the one that feels the most outdated.
  3. Replace it with one new action this week. Doesn’t have to be huge—just different.

Growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when you choose to let go of what got you here and reach for what will get you there.

Coaching isn’t about survival. It’s about growth.

And growth always starts with change.

Which part of your old playbook do you need to throw out this week?

Win the day,
Mandy Green
