Hey coach,
I want to share something with you that I came across in a training from Darren Hardy, author of my favorite book The Compound Effect, that really hit me, especially thinking about how it applies to coaching.
It’s simple, but if you actually apply it, it can change how your entire career plays out.
It comes down to one thing:
Your level of focus.
Most coaches think the difference between them and the top coaches is talent, resources, or experience.
It’s not.
It’s how consistently they can focus on what actually matters.
Here’s how Darren broke it down, and I want you to think about where you fall.
On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is complete focus on the right things…
The top performers operate at about an 8 as their baseline.
They have moments where they hit a 9 or even a 10 when they are locked in.
And when something throws them off, they might drop to a 7.
But that’s their floor.
They don’t stay distracted long.
They recover quickly.
And over time, that consistency is what separates them. Now think about most coaches.
They can hit an 8 or 9.
Maybe at the start of the season.
Maybe during a big recruiting push.
Maybe when things feel urgent.
But they don’t stay there.
They drift.
They get pulled into emails, messages, distractions, and problems.
They drop to a 6… then a 5.
And it takes time to get back.
That’s the difference.
It’s not that great coaches are focused all the time.
It’s that they stay focused longer and recover faster when they lose it.
That’s the edge.
Now think about your day.
How often do you start with a plan… and then get pulled off it?
How often do you sit down to do something important… and end up reacting instead?
How often do you lose an hour and can’t even explain where it went?
That’s not a discipline issue.
That’s a focus issue.
The best coaches don’t rely on willpower to stay focused.
They build systems that protect it.
They have structure around their day.
They know what matters before the day starts.
They reduce distractions instead of trying to fight through them.
They don’t leave focus up to chance.
That’s what a Coach Operating System does.
It raises your baseline.
So instead of bouncing between a 9 and a 4…
you start operating between an 8 and a 9.
And over time, that gap becomes massive.
Because here’s what most people don’t realize.
A small drop in focus doesn’t feel like a big deal in the moment.
But over days, weeks, and months…
it compounds.
Missed follow-ups.
Delayed decisions.
Lost momentum.
Opportunities that never fully develop.
That’s how coaches fall behind.
Not from one big mistake.
From small, repeated losses of focus.
Here’s your question this week:
What is pulling your focus down right now?
Not everything.
Just the one or two things that consistently knock you off track.
Then ask:
What system could I put in place to protect against that?
Because once you protect your focus…
everything else starts to move faster.
This is one of the biggest edges you can build in your career.
Not working more.
Not doing more.
Operating at a higher level of focus, more consistently.
More soon, Mandy
P.S. Most coaches are capable of operating at a high level. They just haven’t built the systems to stay there. That’s what we’re working toward.
If you would like help getting more done without working longer hours, I would love to help. I spend a lot of time helping coaches create simple systems that keep them organized, protect their time, follow up more consistently, and focus on the work that actually moves their program forward.
