Hey Coach,
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been walking through the “10 Success Mindset Shifts Every Coach Needs”—the same shifts that helped me stop drowning in the grind and start leading with more purpose, clarity, and energy.
So far, we’ve talked about:
- growing past your old habits,
- taking fast action,
- working instead of worrying,
- choosing change now (not “later”),
- and quitting busywork so you can actually win.
This week, we’re diving into a shift that took me way too long to learn—but once I got it, everything around me got easier.
It’s Mindset Shift #8: Discipline Through Subtraction Is the Fastest Way to Freedom.
This one matters because most coaches think the solution is to add more…
more tasks, more hours, more hustle.
But the real magic happens when you start cutting.
Let’s get into it.
I remember one fall when my schedule was so packed, I was running on caffeine and chaos more than strategy.
I was doing everything — or at least trying to.
Answering every email.
Jumping into every meeting.
Saying yes to every “quick favor.”
I was busy, and always… still behind.
That’s when I finally realized something no one had ever told me as a young coach:
I didn’t need to do more. I needed to quit more.
And I know — we’ve all heard “quitters never win.”
But here’s the truth:
Smart coaches quit all the time. They just quit the right things.
Winning at recruiting…
Winning at leading your team and staff…
Winning at life…
isn’t about adding more effort on top of an already overloaded schedule.
It’s about cutting — and cutting ruthlessly.
Cutting the shallow work.
Cutting the distractions.
Cutting the perfectionism.
Cutting the commitments that drain your energy without moving you closer to a win.
Because every “no” you say today protects a bigger “yes” tomorrow.
Winning day by day isn’t about cramming more in.
It’s about stripping away everything that isn’t going to help you win.
So today, Coach, try this:
Quit one thing.
Not everything. Not five things.
Just one.
Quit the task that drains you.
Quit the thing that doesn’t move your program forward.
Quit the “I’ve always done it this way” habit that’s stealing your time and energy.
You’ll be surprised how much lighter and more focused you feel when you subtract instead of stack.
And if this message hit home, do me a favor—forward it to one other coach who could use a little more clarity (and a little less chaos) this week.
Let’s help each other win.
Win the day,
Mandy Green
