Watching Game 7 of the NBA Finals got me thinking — games are addictive for a reason.

They’re structured. They’re competitive. They’re measurable. And when you’re playing the right game — they’re FUN.

Every game has:

  • Rules
  • Strategy
  • Winners
  • Losers
  • A SCOREBOARD

The scoreboard is what keeps everyone focused.
Players, coaches, fans — you constantly check it because it tells you where you stand and what needs to happen next.

But here’s the question:

What’s the scoreboard for how you operate your program?
What’s the scoreboard for your recruiting?

If you don’t have one — I think you’re coaching blind.

Having a scoreboard doesn’t have to be complicated. It’s built on one clear system:

  1. Measure your progress and results.
    Example:
  • How many quality recruits are in your pipeline?
  • How many follow-ups did you complete this week?
  • How consistent is player development?
  • Are your staff meetings translating into better execution?

  1. Identify the activities driving those results.
What actions are moving the needle? For recruiting, maybe it’s campus visits. For operations, maybe it’s film sessions or team communication. Track what counts.

  1. Improve those activities through simple reporting.
Weekly review: What worked? What didn’t? Adjust. You don’t need fancy software — clarity over complexity.
  2. Measure again.
    5. Refine the right activities.
    6. Report, adjust, improve.
    7. Measure again.
    8. Rinse and repeat.

This isn’t extra work — it’s a time-saver:

 Stop wasting time on guesswork.
Spend more time on what’s proven to work.
Give your staff and players clarity.
 Create accountability without constant micromanaging.

The best part? Your scoreboard turns your program into a game you can win on purpose, not by chance.

You Can Get Lucky and Make It… But You Can’t Get Lucky and Keep It

The top 2% of programs operate like businesses. They don’t wing it. They track, adjust, improve — consistently.

If you want to win more, recruit better, and run a program that doesn’t drain your time — build your scoreboard.

Or… keep hoping for blind luck.
Your call.
